News Day 2

DAY 2, OCTOBER 29, 2007

On Monday October 29, in the Events Center of the Ariosto Hotel in Lima, two important events related to rural development  in Latin America were celebrated: the inauguration of the Path to Learning Successful Innovations in Rural Microfinance in Latin America and the launching of  the book “Development Banks and the Agro Sector” by  Carolina Trivelli and Hildegardi Venero.

Following words of welcome from representatives of the Institute of Peruvian Studies and the Regional Corporation PROCASUR, Felipe Portocarrerro (IFC) and Juan Palacios (AGROBANCO) reflected on the role of the public bank in the development of rural financial services in Latin America.

A Peruvian National Panel debated the evolution of the SMFR, with special attention paid to agricultural and non-agricultural micro credit services.  The Panel also identified and discussed the principal actors participating in providing rural financial services to poor rural populations in Peru. Carolina Trivelli (IPS), Francisco Dumler (COPEME), Gaby Cardenas (Banco Nación), José Sialer (Mimdes, Fondoces and Ifad), and Fernando Loayza (Sierra Sur Project) discussed relevant aspects of the national reality.

In spite of the event’s linguistic complexity—two translators provided simultaneous translation for French and English-speaking participants from Africa and Asia—the 17 ‘ruteros’ participated in an animated question period moderated by the Path’s technical coordinator,  Carlos Rodríguez Olivieri.

Ariel Halpern, logistical coordinator of the Path, gave a summary of the event and provided recommendations for the following day.

After the first group photo and dinner in the hotel, the participants boarded the bus at 7:30 and set off for Huancayo, and the first of fifteen case studies to be visited en route.
